Freckles were all the rage not too long ago. Regardless of whether you’re a fan of them or not, do you know how to deal with them when you’re in the sun?

Tanning with Freckles

Protect from the sun

Ah, freckles. These beauty marks might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but when you have them, you have them, and if you do, you’ve probably noticed them getting a bit darker when exposed to sunlight. Why do you think that is?

Let’s take a step back and think of why you have freckles in the first place. Freckles are basically spots in our epidermis where there is a higher concentration of melanin, the skin coloring pigment. So, when you’re exposed to sunlight, and the cells that produce melanin, called melanocytes, are evenly spread out all over the body, you probably get a nice, even tan. Otherwise, if you have little clusters of melanin in your skin, you get freckles from unprotected sun exposure. And if you already have freckles, the sun is likely to darken those spots.

Not all is lost. Although, being exposed to the sun might not be the best idea, unless you’re trying to heighten the appearance of your freckles, you can still have a beautiful, glowy tan. Sunless tanning options like spray tans are the way to go. The difference lies in the fact that spray tanning solutions rest on the outer layer of your skin and do not interfere with your skin’s melanocytes, so instead of making your spots darker, a spray tan can help even out the color of your skin. Your freckles might not disappear completely, but a spray tan can minimize their appearance. Just make sure you understand what to do before and after tanning, so you can have a great-looking tan for longer.
