Can exercise really affect our skin and make us younger?

In Boulder, you have Veranda Sun Super Tanning Salon, we know skin and we know tans.  We are going to share an astonishing truth, to help you achieve the reality of younger looking skin!  As we all know, our skin changes as we get older.  We will eventually see the crow’s feet, laugh lines and sagging.  These changes are not all bad, but what if we could prolong the youthfulness a bit longer?

Our Skinfitness and health

The outer layer of our skin is comprised mostly of dead skin cells and collagen.  The older we get, the drier, flakier and denser our skin gets.  At the same time this is happening, the layer under the epidermis begins to thin.  It loses elasticity, giving the skin a translucent and saggier appearance.  All this happens just because the clock ticks.  However, researchers at McMaster University in Ontario recently looked into this simple fact wondering if it could be altered.

Is It True?

Researchers tested the possibility of measuring exercise and the effect it has on our skin.  They took 29 male and female volunteers varying in age from 20-84 years old.  Half the participants were active, meaning they completed at least three hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week.  The other half was completely sedentary, exercising for less than an hour per week.  The researchers then took skin samples from unexposed skin to examine microscopically.  Once compared, they saw the samples overall aligned with the age expected- older volunteers had thicker layers of outer skin and thinner inner skin layers.  However, the results changed considerably when the group was subdivided according to exercise habits.  After the age of 40, the men and women who exercised frequently had thinner healthier outer layers of skin and thicker under layers.  Even though these volunteers were over the age of 40, their skin compared to that of a 20 or 30 year old, even some who were past the age of 65!

Dr. Tarnopolsky, who oversaw the study, commented ‘I don’t want to over-hype the results, but, really, it was pretty remarkable to see.’  They offered a second study to confirm the results of the first one and received the same results.  Although, the second study was focused on volunteers aged 65 and older. At the beginning of the study, they had normal skin for their age.  After working out twice a week at a moderately strenuous pace for 30 minutes, they were biopsied at the end of three months.  What they found was astounding, their skin had altered to compare to that of a 20-40 year old!

So, with a little exercise, you too can take years off your appearance!
