Oil pulling is a home care therapy that has recently grown significantly in popularity. What exactly is it about, though? Does it work? We’ll tell you about it.

What is Oil Pulling?

Although it’s an ancient Ayurvedic practice, it’s been spreading throughout the Western hemisphere lately. There are toxins that live in our mouth and are usually absorbed through our tongue and cheeks, and end up in our bloodstream. This can cause things like headaches, acne, or fatigue. Oil pulling is a cleansing ritual that “pulls” out those harmful toxins and helps improve your oral health, as well as your overall health.

How Is It Done?

Ideally, oil pulling should be done with coconut oil, as it has incredible health benefits that other oils don’t. Take one or two teaspoons of coconut oil and let it melt in your mouth. Swish the oil around in your mouth anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes. The longer you do this for, the more microbes the oil will pull out. You could choose to do it for just five minutes each day, but doing it for 15 to 20 mins at least four times a week will generate better results.

The oil needs to be swished around long enough for it to turn a milky white, which indicates that the bacteria has been “pulled” off.

At that point, spit out the oil and rise with water. Use salt water for extra benefits. Scrape your tongue and brush your teeth after to get rid of toxins that might still be hanging out in your mouth. Avoid spitting it down the drain, as this could cause a clog.

White Smile and Clear Skin with Oil PullingWhat Are the Benefits?

People that practice oil pulling claim to have experienced several benefits such as:

  • Clear skin
  • Whiter teeth
  • Improved oral health
  • Fresh breath
  • Immunity boost

Regardless of how often you “oil pull,” this practice should not replace your regular dental hygiene routine and periodic dental visits.

Oil pulling does not reverse the effects of tooth decay, and it’s important that patients are made fully aware of that.
