Take advantage of the great Colorado outdoors this season and improve your wellbeing!
These are good times because Summer is officially here! And living in Boulder -the adventure capital of Colorado- means that we have so many amazing opportunities to visit great outdoor locations and spend some time immersed in nature, soak up some precious sunlight to optimize our Vitamin D levels, and exercise and socialize outdoors while camping, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, etc.
By spending quality time outdoors you are investing in your health and wellbeing, as there are actual science-based reasons why being outside makes you happy and healthy. Research has shown that lack of sunlight reduces the amount of serotonin in our brains. Serotonin is critical to fight depression because it is a natural antidepressant built into our bodies. When we increase the amount of sunlight we’re getting, we naturally increase our serotonin levels.
Vitamin D Optimization
The sunshine vitamin is so important for your health and happiness that in fact, the more researchers study vitamin D, the more benefits they find. Vitamin D deficiency doesn’t only impact our health and happiness. If you have good levels of D you could turn around serious health problems, such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
And the best natural source of vitamin D is the sun! With controlled UV exposure you can help your body produce the needed vitamin D and avoid risks. In fact, a study by Australian epidemiologist Robyn Lucas shows that given all the drawbacks of vitamin D deficiency, far more people die from lack of exposure to the sun than from too much sun.
So how much sun is actually needed for the body to produce the required vitamin D?
According to Dr Anjali Mahto -Consultant Dermatologist & British Skin Foundation Spokesperson-, it is a complex interplay between environmental, personal, and physical factors and varies between individuals.
The UVB spectrum in the sunlight is required for vitamin D production, and it peaks around noon and during the Summer. Receiving direct sunlight on any area of your skin for 15 – 20 minutes without sunscreen, should be enough to produce sufficient levels of D. A dark skinned person will require more sunshine time to produce adequate amounts, compared to someone with fair skin.
Blood levels of 25(OH)D (25 hydroxyvitamin D) are the best marker for vitamin D status in the body. There is no accepted optimal level, but values below 12.5-25 nmol/L are agreed to be deficient. To make sure you have optimum Vitamin D blood levels, ask your doctor for more info!
