It’s not being selfish!


Relax under the sunMaybe this sounds as something awfully hard to achieve, especially if you have a partner and kids, but it is just a matter of learning how to do it, and sticking to it.

Taking some time entirely for yourself is so important for your physical, mental and spiritual health. It will empower you to take charge of your happiness and help you lower stress, become more productive and have more energy. And in return, the people around you will see the benefits for themselves as well, as you will have greater patience and a more positive attitude to your personal and work relationships.

Put it in your schedule

The best way to make sure you get your “me-time”, is to literally book it in your agenda. You can do it every day, once a week, once a month or…why not? All of them if necessary! Just make sure to allocate time proportional to the frequency with which you’ll be doing it.

In other words, if don’t have the luxury of having 1 hour entirely for yourself, 5 to 15 minutes a day can work. Use them to focus on taking deep breaths and to let your mind wander away from everything that’s on your to-do list. Get up from your desk, stretch and energize your muscles; and then take a few minutes to do nothing and sit quietly, to let your mind and body rest a little.

And then at least once a month, book a little more time: it can be 30 minutes to an hour or so. Get a pedicure or a facial; come to Veranda Sun Tanning Salon to get a nice tan and work on your much needed dose of Vitamin D; read that book you’ve been wanting to read or do something different, like going to a museum or walking trail you’ve never been to. You can also use the time to write down your dreams and goals in a journal, just make sure to not use your personal time to fold laundry or catch up on email!

How to make time for myself?

If you have children, you can take advantage of their school or nap time. It may also help you to wake up earlier, turn off the smartphone and ask for help with the housework. It’s ok if you need to tell your friends and family what you’re doing, if that’s what it takes for them to understand and respect how important this time is for you.

And most importantly, stick to it! Unless it is absolutely necessary, don’t cancel your personal time. It may be tempting and easy to do it, but if you get into this habit then you won’t have any me-time left at all.
