recommends 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D a day for adults ages 19 to 70. For adults age 71 and older, the recommendation increases to 800 IU a day. The Institute of Medicine recommends that adults avoid taking more than 4,000 IUs a day.

Vitamin D helps bone health, increases immunity, and actually prevents some forms cancer. Getting Vitamin D from UV (ultraviolet) light has been shown to be better than getting it through supplements or just by food ingestion.

1. You get more Vitamin D from UV light than than supplements or just food.

2. There is no overdose of Vitamin D with UV light.

3. You get to store it longer when you get it from UV light.
